2022 The language metaverse. Teach languages with native speakers. Teach directly naming objects in their natural scene.

The language metaverse.
Teach languages with native speakers.
Teach directly naming objects in their natural scene.
The metaverse can provide an immersive environment for teaching languages.

This video compares virtual worlds that can be used for educational purposes.
It highlights Edutopia 1 in Kitely; and in doing so, it shows the incredibly wide range of cheap or free items available to teachers and all the games and exercises I have personally created and put on the Kitely Marketplace to teach English the way I think it should be taught in virtual worlds.

2020 #VWEDU: Metaverse for immersive language learning. Role play in virtual worlds.

Metaverse for immersive language learning.
Role play in virtual worlds.
Language is a social skill.  Learning it takes a social environment. But that does not mean you have to pay people to provide it.

2022 The metaverse: English as a second language. After you finish formal lessons you want practice. Find people you can talk to in Second life.

The metaverse: English as a second language.
After you finish formal lessons you want practice.
Find people you can talk to in Second life.
You want to practice conversations in English?  Meet people in Second Life.  They will talk with you if you stick to subjects they are interested in

Practice

  • Lots of courses can get you started in English as a second language.
  • But where do you go from there?
  • You need to keep practicing to further develop your skills.
  • But how do you find English speakers where you live?
  • Try the metaverse.  The language is mostly English.
  • And you can find lots of people there if you know how to look.
  • Metaverse groups: Find people that share your interests. Join the groups and learn of the events. Here are some groups for Second Life.
  • People will want to talk to you about their interests.
  • So you need to join groups that share some on your interests.
  • And you may have to go to meetings in the middle of your night.
  • But during the day in Europe and the Americas there are about 45.000 people online.

2020 #VWEDU: Introducing Virtually Anywhere in Second Life language-learning project. Narrative-based learning (PBL) for languages. Pionia Destiny presents.

Introducing Virtually Anywhere in Second Life
language-learning project.
Narrative-based learning for languages

Narrative-based (project-based) learning of a second language. Following narration concentrates attention on the language.  And a project can exercise the production of that language.   Virtual scenes related to the story can provide and environment for developing the story.

The instruction

  • Virtually Anywhere is a trans-media experience for language learning.
  • Students collaborate in the creation of a new fiction based on an existing series.
  • The story line is from the audio series by Cambridge Assessment English.
  • The series is about students struggling with coursework.
  • A mentor appears and takes them on travels to virtual scenes.
  • The virtual scenes fit with the narrative.
  • The narration is entirely in the target language.
  • The project is to write new episodes in the target language.
  • The virtual scenes provide an environment for the new episodes.

Immersive language learning and:
Why would you do a presentation this way?
Use the powers of the Digitals.

We digitals have a new set of powers in the digital worlds.  We don't have to do things the old way.  We can do things in ways that are more productive in fitting our objectives.

.
  • Heike Philp / Gwen Gwasi;
  • Jennifer Hamilton / Jaz Beverly;
  • Annalisa di Pierro /Innesfree;

OSCC19 GUINEVERE -
LEARN A LANGUAGE THROUGH GAMES
IN VIRTUAL WORLDS

Final project results on project GUINEVERE (Games Used IN Engaging Virtual Environments for Real-time language Education) are reported.

The 2 year EU funded project GUINEVERE has come to a close and the final project results are being presented. There are quite a few deliverables in the form of studies on the theory of game design/ gamification and best practice guidelines for teachers.
The GUINEVERE server in OpenSim has been the sandbox for the teacher training and several games have been created which are stunning in variety and building and scripting skills. A mobile app has been developed to use imagery from virtual worlds to create interactive stories by language teachers.
GUINEVERE stands for “Games Used IN Engaging Virtual Environments for Real-time language Education.” The project is coordinated by the University of Central Lancashire in the UK together with the University of Istanbul in Turkey, let’s talk online in Belgium, 3DLS in the Netherlands and Italian University Line in Italy.

2019 EDU: Language learning: What could a virtual (online) campus offer?

Language learning:
What could a virtual (online) campus offer?

A school has special advantages for teaching its native language to people who want to learn that language. The old disadvantage used to be that people could only attend that school after expensive travel. Travel on the internet is free and fast.

Universal campus (Kitely)
  • A German university would choose its own campus view.
  • As would any university anywhere.

Native speakers

  • The virtual campus could be provided by a school with the target language.
  • If you want to learn German, you could learn it at a German university.
  • Talk with German instructors. Socialize with German students.
  • Low cost plan: "Study in Germany, live at home"

Contents

  • "Local" sights and people
  • Viewpoint of the school

  • Situated learning
  • Social learning (All language is social.)
