2019 BIZ: Promo: MUVE: Use-cases for marketing user-managed virtual worlds. Think product differentiation. Think multiple markets. The Kitely model

Use-cases for marketing user-managed virtual worlds.
Think product differentiation.
Think multiple markets.
The Kitely model

User-managed digital worlds have many potential uses, but "potential means you haven't done it yet."  Not all those uses will be comfortable under the same brand.  A bit of Design Thinking suggests  a reinvention.
A bit of design thinking

  • What business are you in?
  • Where is there a demand you can meet?
  • What is a user-built world from the user perspective?

2020 #VWEDU: Rezmela(TM): Set App 4 Creating text posters, producing a whole scene

Rezmela: Set App 4
Creating text posters,
producing a whole scene.

A demonstration of how the Rezmela system can be used to provide many alternative scenes in the same area.

  • An instructor could create a classroom or other teaching space.
  • Could clear the space for another scene.
  • And recreate the classroom when needed.
  • Thus one area could serve multiple classes.

A presentation?

  • Well, where is the auditorium?
  • This is not an auditorium presentation.
  • How can you have a presentation without an auditorium?
  • In a virtual word we often have a presentation in a place relevant to the subject.
  • How does that work?  Where does the audience sit?
  • The avatars don't sit.  The walk around in the place.
  • That won't work.  They can't see the slides while they are walking.
  • We don't present with slides.  The places they walk to do the job of the slides.
  • You can't do a power-point presentation without slides.
  • We don't usually do power-point presentations.
  • Okay, so go on with your story  But you are doing it all wrong.

OpenSimulator Community Conference (OSCC) is not all tech.  It is not even mostly tech.  It is mostly about uses of OpenSimpulator, especiallu in education.  And you do have time to catch a presentation--they mostly take 20 minutes.  Here are my suggestions for Sun. Dec. 15.

2019 MUVE: Content: Save an OAR file (copy of OpenSim region): Honor creator rights--Lisa Laxton

Save an OAR file
(copy of OpenSim region):
Honor creator rights--Lisa Laxton

How to save an OAR file and honor creator rights.
What is an OAR?
Around the Open Simulator community, we hear things like "save your OAR" or "get an OAR from Outworldz". For the non-technical users learning to host their own regions or grids, OAR is an acronym for OpenSimulator Archive. It is a file type that can contain all of the assets of a region, its terrain, and its parcels. In other words, an OAR can be a complete backup of a virtual world known as a region in OpenSimulator. This feature allows a region owner to save and restore "backups" of their region.

2019 #VWEDU: A horse ride through Coopersville (MUVE) 1905. Go back in time a little over 100 years.

A horse ride through Coopersville (MUVE) 1905.
Go back in time a little over 100 years.

Coopersville is a MUVE (virtual world) model of a US town of the early 20th Century.  It has houses of that era (houses of the Victorian and Edwardian times), offers clothing of that period, has transportation of that period (streetcars, early Fords, and horses), plays music of that time (especially ragtime), and has the early flying things (Wright Flyer, hot air balloons).  Just right for a site visit by a class studying that part of history.

OpenSim Fest with some new tricks

New things I found at OpenSim Fest 2019.  AvatarFest has been a creative effort which has celebrated the people of Open Sim for years, and AvatarFest 2018 was it's final year. In the spirit of this incredible yearly festival, OpenSim Fest begins with our first festival starting in March 2019.

Opensim Fest Rises in March 2019.

OpenSim Fest Weekend and beyond

"There are two parts to the festival; the first is the weekend of live performances on the Opensim Fest grid on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of March 2019. and second. you will be able to visit the region via the hypergrid to see the exhibits until the 6th April 2019. Nearer the time of the festival a full schedule will be posted and pages will be posted to the site with a full list of performers and exhibitors.

2019 WW: Voice problems with Vivox on your grid? Suggestions for plan B

Voice problems with Vivox on your grid?
Suggestions for plan B

Vivox has demonstrated that it can be out for two weeks or longer.  For educational or most business uses that is a single point of failure.  An alternative is needed.  Some grids may offer fallback options.  Web-worlds can provide a fast fallback with no advance preparation.

Web-worlds are alternatives

  • 3DWebWorldz
  • CybaLOUNGE
  • You can visit either of these as a guest, without registering.
  • No preparation needed.

2019 MUVE: HG: Why am I talking about MUVEs when I am really talking about virtual worlds?

Why am I talking about MUVEs when
I am really talking about virtual worlds?

Researchers use the term "MUVE" to stand for "Multi-User Virtual Environment."   We virtual worlders use the term "virtual world" to mean the same thing.  These are ingroup terms for different ingroups.  I want this blog to share information between these groups, so I speak the language of both groups.  Here I report on some of the work of the researchers.

2018 MUVE: EDU: WW: Communities online in 3D. Meet the MUVErs

Communities online in 3D.
Meet the MUVErs

Online MultiUser Virtual Environments (MUVEs) are becoming widely available as tools for social media, education and organizations.   The delivery system has been by a company hosting many interconnected MUVEs but an alternative is emerging to allow communities or organizations to manage their own themed MUVES while the technical work is managed by a technical company.

Walking tour of a building

Online MultiUser Virtual Environment (MUVE)

  • Virtual environment: Simulated 3D space created in a computer
  • Online MUVE: A MUVE accessed over the internet.
  • Community: Group of people with common interests and shared goals.
  • Communities usually have a place where they get together.
  • As social media has developed on the web, that place can be online.
  • A themed online MUVE can offer a place where people get together.
  • They get together, represented by human-like figures.
  • In a simulated place representing their common interests (the theme).
  • They talk about their common interests, share information and make plans.

Who would be interested?

  • Educational systems: Online education expands capacity.
  • Companies: Meet customers where they live.  Meet workers where they work.
  • Service organizations: Confer with clients while working from home.
