2017 IMA: WG 31 TMFFail succeeds. The benefits of problem analysis

TMFFail succeeds. The benefits of problem analysis
Final report on the TMFFail project.  The project developed a  test object/protocol that could reliably replicate the problem.  The project was publicized in a blog article.  It attracted tests and expert opinion.  A fix was developed by one of the OS Devs and placed in the OS 0.9 master.

Background

Early in June, I wrote about a problem that I called TMFFail
The problem: when a single texture is applied to multiple faces of an object,
sometimes a few faces don't change.
IMA Test WG: Problem analysis tests, objects, protocols: Example: TMFFail
I suggested that such tests could be a useful contribution by IMA WG31

Results

  • I got a number of helpful responses.
  • The outcome was that Ubit, an OS Dev, found a way to fix the problem.
  • After the break: details of the findings and
  • comments on the benefits of test objects and protocols.

Matariki: Pleiades Short Poetry Workshop, Tue 6/27, 7pm SLT

Ngā mihi o te tau hou: This week the Short Poetry Workshop celebrates the Māori New Year – Matariki. The Matariki star cluster is known as Pleiades. Guest host Ngagpa Writer will introduce the Pleiades which is a 7-line poem. Each line of the poem starts with the same first letter of the title word. So join us at the Short Poetry Library to celebrate Matariki and learn, write and share the Pleiades.

2017 OSHG: WRITE: Web-worlds as a place for storytelling

    Web-worlds as places for storytelling
Storytelling is popular is virtual worlds.  It requires mostly talk, scenery and possibly music.  All these can easily be provided in a web-world, where the access is much easier.
    Mos Eisley Cantina

    • There are stories here at Mos Eisley.  We all remember one.
    • There are many more.  That old wizard, Obi-Won Kenobi has hundreds.
    • Can we go there again?  With less violence and more stories.
    • Yes, we can go there through the virtual world portal in Kitely.
    • Seanchai Library
    • But soon there may be an even easier route.
    • We could go there through a portal in a browser.
    • We could even hear stories read:  StoryLink radio
    • We might meet other people who are as interested in stories as we are.
    • We could talk with them, chat about the stories.
    • Talk about new plots and characters we would like to see.
    • Yeah, I said soon.
    -
    • Meanwhile, here is a web-world you can visit now.
    • Selby's nonprofit web-world.
    • You can log in as a guest, no registering.  See how easy it is.
    • Not Mos Eisley Cantina.  Just a little place to chat.
    • I will be there almost every weekday at 10-10:30 AM California time.
    • Soon I hope to show you instructions on how to start on your own web-world.
    • Some of my friends have imported parts of an OAR file into a web-world.
    • So importing the scenery is possible, but not yet easy.

2017 OSHG: Physics with ubODE. How does it do vehicles?

Physics with ubODE in virtual worlds.
      How does it do vehicles?
A new physics engine, ubODE, has been introduced in the upcoming version of OpenSimulator (OS0.9.X).  Since some grids  are running OS0.9.x, it is possible to get video demonstrations of vehicle performance under ubODE.  Here are 3, showing that vehicle performance can be quite good.

2017 OSHG: IMA Test WG: Problem analysis tests, objects and protocols: Example: TMFFail

Problem analysis tests, objects and protocols:
        Example: TMFFail
Sometimes a persistent bug/defect is noted and the source is not immediately obvious.  No one can investigate a problem unless it can be replicated.  This becomes a greater problem if the defect is intermittent.  In such cases, the IMA TestWG may be able to create a test object and test protocol to support investigation of the problem.

        Example problem

        • Texture multiple face fail (TMFFail)
        • In an object with multiple faces, you can apply the same texture to all faces at once.
        • This is done in the texture panel of the edit window.
        • Sometimes the process fails on one or a few faces.
        • The failure is intermittent, so not easy to replicate.
        • This test object makes replication easier.
        • Thanks to Kayaker Magic for the initial design of this test object.
        • And gives more confidence of failure to replicate when that is found.
        • The  test object might later be incorporated into the QA test suite.

2017 OSHG: IMA Test WG: Comparison suites for versions, modules, etc.

        IMA Test WG:
Comparison suites for versions, modules, etc.
Since we have options in OpenSim, we need comparison data to provide a basis for choice.  Here I describe some of the things we will need to test.  Preparation for the tests will require gathering of collecting a test suite for each measurement objective.

2017 IMA: OSHG: IMA Test WG: suites needed: Quality Assurance

IMA TestWG:  suites needed:  Quality Assurance
The IMA TestWG will be developing test-management methods for several classes of tests.  One prominent class is Quality Assurance.  These tests are done (or should be done) when software under development is released for production use.  QA generally requires a suite of tests designed to identify failures that are not likely to show up in the ordinary testing done during development.  This article suggests the general method that will probably be used

2017 OSHG: IMA: Web-world general rooms, the Eventorator Room

Web-world general rooms, the Eventorator Room
Since a web-world can be embedded in multiple web sites, we will want to think about what kind of web-world designs might be worth embedding in multiple web sites.  Here I propose one such design, a room that shows newcomers events upcoming on the hypergrid and how to find them.
        Eventorator web walk
        • The current Eventorator is a walk with posters presenting selected web pages.
        • These pages present calendars and other pages with upcoming Hypergrid events.
        • (Details after the break)
        • A web-world could present much more content.
        • It could have live hosts at times--perhaps an hour before the start of an event.
        • A live host could promote the event, telling details, such as a song list.
        • A live host could talk new people through getting to the inworld venue.
        • Performers could meet people in the web-world and promote events.
        • Any event streamed over the web could be streamed to the Eventorator
        • A web-world can be embedded in multiple web pages.
        • Plan for the HG eventorator

2017 EVENT: IMA: IMA Social Web and Virtual World Events, Calendar

        IMA: Shawn's Calendar,
        monthly view

This post is being used to create a monthly events calendar for Shawn's Hypergrid calendar.   I will put this view on the Eventorator, along with the original agenda view, so people can use the one they prefer.

The agenda view shows all the events on a day, starting with the current date.    But on a very busy day you may have to scroll down.  (You can do that with a web page on a prim.)  The monthly view shows much less current information, but does emphatically make the point that we have a lot going on in OpenSim.  (Despite the name, I am reasonably sure that it lists only OpenSim events and probably only those accessible on the Hypergrid.)

2017 OSHG: IMA Commerce working group forming

        IMA Commerce working group forming
IMA Commerce WG, call for participation, citing of stakeholders, and statement of initial objectives regarding digital economy, intellectual property, and intergrid commerce.  Added comments about IMA's possible function as an OpenSim Chamber of Commerce.

        • Mike Lorry has formed a Kitely group called IMA Commerce Working Group.
        • That prepares for an IMA working group of the same name.
        • Related: Hypergrid Chamber of Commerce
