2020 #VWEDU: Why the digital campus should provide private student places: Identity and ownership. And how to do it in virtual worlds

Why the digital campus should provide student places.
Identity and ownership.
Schools can provide private spaces for students at negligible cost and with significant benefits.

  • I make my place public so anyone can visit.
  • No walls or roof: the weather is always good.

A place of my own.

  • Where they can keep a calendar, a work schedule, and links to work in progress.
  • Where they can show their work products and talk with friends
  • Display badges, trophies, posters and media prims showing their portfolio products.
  • A place where they can put their furniture and decorations.
  • How do they get all those things?  By working (learning) for them.
  • How to Teach Online So All Students Feel Like They Belong

What gives a sense of ownership?

  • Control: having control over it
  • Intimate knowledge: knowing a lot about it
  • Self-investment: putting a lot of effort into customizing it.

Can virtual worlds handle private spaces?

  • Web-worlds, completely
  • Installed virtual worlds, mostly private

2019 EDU: WW: The online campus: Your campus on the internet. Meet fellow students, work with them

The online campus:
Your  campus
on the internet

This campus travels the world.  It can teach in any language its owner wants.  It is open any time students want to meet there.  It can meet students in their own homes. The elaborate version requires installing an app.  The simple version lives in a browser (Chrome, for example).

A campus is more than classes

  • A campus is not just a place where you go to study.
  • You meet fellow students, you work with them, you learn from them.
  • You develop contacts you may work with in your later career.
  • You can take online classes by yourself.
  • Can you talk with anyone about what you are learning?
  • In the old-style school, you could talk with classmates.
  • You could ask them questions, answer questions, study together.
  • Can you do that in an online class?
  • Maybe not, but you can do it in a virtual campus

What is a virtual campus?

  • A virtual campus is a 3D representation of a college campus.
  • Students attend via the internet, but it goes beyond online courses.
  • Students don't have to learn by themselves.
  • They come to classes with other students.
  • There are commons rooms for students to meet out of class.
  • Students can organize their own clubs, hold their own events.
  • They can hold study sessions with other students as they wish.
  • They can form fraternities and sororities if the school allows it.
  • A virtual campus is more than online classes.

2019 BIZ: THEME: EDU: Kitely offers themed "grids". Independent websites using Kitely tech but managed by an organization

Kitely offers themed "grids".
Independent websites using Kitely tech
but managed by the user organization

Introducing Kitely Organizations (private grids) that let schools and other organizations have their own 3D places with tech management by Kitely and student management by the school.

The Empty Classroom
  • Themed grids are especially suited to schools.
  • The school and its offerings would be the theme.
  • The grid would use the name of the school.
  • The school would manage the student activities.
  • With Organizations, Kitely would do the tech work to run the grid.

Kitely organizations (virtual grids)

  • Introducing Organizations (Virtual Grids)
  • Organizations is in addition to the standard Kitely grid.
  • It has no effect on the people in the current Kitely grid.
  • Unless they want to produce content to support an organization.
  • The main users of Organizations are likely ti be educators.
  • They could buy educational products on Kitely Market for courses.
  • They could rent educational regions for use in courses.
  • Educational regions could be replicas of culturally relevant sites.
  • Credentialed instructors might get positions as adjunct faculty.
  • Adjunct faculty might bring their own instructional content or regions.

Kitely announces virtual campuses

Your virtual campus

Virtual campuses for real organizations

  • Kitely handles the Building and Grounds work.
  • You run the school or organization.
  • You don't teach people  how to register. You register them (batch registration).
  • You register everyone, using a database or spreadsheet from your own records.
  • You don't teach people how to get a viewer and install it. There's an AP for that.
  • You don't teach people to find their classrooms.  You tell that to system.
  • You don't send people somewhere else to get into to your campus.
  • You give them a link that opens an entry screen with your organization's name on it.
  • In short, you manage the school, Kitely manages the details.
