Therapeutic applications
in virtual worlds
Updated 6/22/2018
Social VR (virtual worlds) is increasingly being used to create therapeutic or helpful environments in connection with psychological problems. Here I have collected some publicly available examples to suggest the possibilities.
- Avatar therapy 'reduces power of schizophrenia voices'
- The Lancet Psychiatry journal
- This therapy reduced distress and frequency.
- It was more effective than counselling

The Virtual Reality Medical Center
VRMC currently uses virtual reality exposure therapy (3-dimensional computer simulation) in combination with physiological monitoring and feedback to treat panic and anxiety disorders. These conditions include specific phobias such as fear of flying, fear of driving, fear of heights, fear of public speaking, fear of thunderstorms, claustrophobia, agoraphobia, arachnophobia, social phobia, panic disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder due to motor vehicle accidents. General stress management and relaxation skills are taught for stress-related disorders

Wikipedia
Virtual reality therapy (VRT), also known as virtual reality immersion therapy (VRIT), simulation for therapy (SFT), virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET), and computerized CBT (CCBT), is the use of virtual reality technology for psychological or occupational therapy. Patients receiving virtual reality therapy navigate through digitally created environments and complete specially designed tasks often tailored to treat a specific ailment. Technology can range from a simple PC and keyboard setup, to a modern virtual reality headset. It is widely used as an alternative form of exposure therapy, in which patients interact with harmless virtual representations of traumatic stimuli in order to reduce fear responses. It has proven to be especially effective at treating PTSD. Virtual reality therapy has also been used to help stroke patients regain muscle control, to treat other disorders such as body dysmorphia, and to improve social skills in those diagnosed with autism.

Web-worlds as a possible future
- Web-worlds require no special equipment.
- They can be accessed on most equipment that will run a browser.
- They can be set up to provide a secure connection (https).
- They can be set up to allow users to build and modify them:
- CybaLOUNGE is a user-built 3D virtual world running in a browser.
- Or they can be professionally built: Welcome to Web-Worldz.com

ReplyDeleteVirtual reality therapy (VRT) can cure traumatic stress and anxiety in people. During the treatment, patients repeatedly see simulated environments to overcome difficulties of the past. This therapy has complex procedures, which is why only skilled doctors can perform it.
