Social user-built 3D on the web:
an extension of your living room,
your office, or your classroom.
But this extension reaches into your laptop.
How we digitals use 3D user-built virtual worlds on the web for social educational, and business purposes
A user-built digital place
- Much like the "real" world that we are accustomed to.
- It looks like our normal world.
- If you come at the right time, there are people (avatars).
- The people are talking to each other.
- They are all doing what they please.
- Some may be playing a game.
- They may be singing and dancing.
- They may be telling jokes.
- A few may be building something.
- Or maybe just rearranging furniture (in a user-built place).
- Some may be taking pictures or making videos.
- Some will be so busy on their own projects that you won't see them.
- They are in a class or holding a business meeting.
- Some may just be looking around.
What kind of 3D?
- We see lots of articles about 3D environments simulated on a computer.
- When they talk about different kinds of 3D, they talk about tech differences.
- I leave that to the techies. I will talk about use differences.
- The tech is advanced enough that we can choose the tech that fits our needs.
- We just have to know our needs--how do we want to use the tech.
- We may want to use it as a digital parlor where we welcome guests.
- Or as a digital office where we meet with office mates, clients or potential customers.
- Or as a digital conference room, where we hold meetings of our working groups.
- Or as a digital classroom where we meet with students about their work.
- User-built:.authorized people can change things, just as in physical space.
- They can place objects and move them, just as in their own office or classroom.
- For some people that may create a sense of ownership.
- Web-worlds are easy to get to. Here are a couple of examples.
What is social 3D on the internet?
- Social: People doing things with other people.
- 3D: A computer display that appears to be three dimensional.
- The computer can be a PC, a tablet, or anything that will run a browser.
- They can be taking a class, having a business meeting, or just having a chat.
- No games. the users decide what to do, not the gamemasters.
What do I need?
- A computer, laptop, Chromebook, tablet, or smart phone.
- A reasonably good internet connection.
- A microphone (most laptops have these built in,)
- Virtual reality is not new and it is not expensive. The new and expensive: stereoscopic (VR) headsets. They may be good for first person games. What will they do for user-built virtual worlds?

What do I have to do to check this out?
- There are two web-worlds available on your browser:
- CybaLOUNGE or 3DWebWorldz.
- No registration, no password. You give a nickname and maybe pick an avatar.
- On a laptop click on the scene to enter it, use the up arrow key to walk forward.
- If you come between noon and 12:30 pm on a weekday, I will probably be there.
- Those are small 3D worlds. Much larger 3D worlds are available.
- The larger ones require you to install something and register.
- That takes a laptop or desktop computer.
Can I give a lecture?
- You could give live lectures on a virtual campus. But why would you?
- If you make a video of a live lecture, you can use the same lecture multiple times.
- If you do it in a virtual world, you can do it in scenes relevant to the subject.
- You can walk around and point to things in the scene.
- That may be more interesting than slides with just the pictures of the things.
- The things you are talking about could be animated.
- That might beat those pictures you put up on flat screen.
