Opensim, a Primer: Hypergrid, Search, OAR, IAR
Updated 8/19/2017
Terms and concepts you need to know to think about Opensim

Opensim

OpenSimulator is an open source multi-platform, multi-user 3D application server. It can be used to create a virtual environment (or world) which can be accessed through a variety of clients, on multiple protocols. It also has an optional facility (the Hypergrid) to allow users to visit other OpenSimulator installations across the web from an account on a 'home' OpenSimulator installation.

Hypergrid

The hypergrid is an extension to opensim that allows you to link your opensim to other opensim grids on the internet, so you can teleport between different grids as easily as you can teleport between regions -- even make friends, go shopping, and send instant messages.  The hypergrid is effectively supporting the emergence of a Web of virtual worlds.

Sim-on-a-stick., SOAS

Sim-on-a-stick., SOAS runs on your computer with its own isolated instances of MySQL, Apache, and PHP for Windows.

A virtual world on your laptop. DreamWorld, wants to be the installer for the rest of us Some people, especially content creators, use SOAS for private, cost free, and lag-free building.  They then make an OAR file and upload it to Kitely. From there they can put it on the Kitely market and market to the hypergrid.

Varregions

Varregions are a feature of OpenSimulator that allow multiple 256 x 256 meter regions to be combined in to a single larger region, such that there is no border transition between regions and moving into the various regions will return position co-ordinates greater than 256.

Firestorm for Opensim

Most 3rd party viewers will probably work for Opensim grids, though you may need a different version.  A good version to start with is: Firestorm for Opensim.  Note that you need a version specifically for Opensim.  Do not try to use the version you may be using in Second Life.  Here is your link to Firestorm Support.
The Firestorm for Opensim version is pre-populated with some of the more commonly used grid addresses.

Explore and travel

    OAR file for Opensim

OpenSimulator archives (OAR)  save the whole region and everything on it (if you own the stuff or have the right permissions), so that you may fully restore the terrain, region parcel data, the textures of objects and their inventories when loaded onto a completely different system using a different asset database.  An OAR file serves as a back-up or means of transfer to SOAS, or possibly means of transfer to other grids if they allow OAR uploads.

    IAR file format

OpenSimulator Inventory Archives (IARs) are a means by which inventory folders and items can be saved offline to a single file (IAR). This file can be loaded into a different OpenSimulator installation.

      1. Nice summary! You might want to make it a bit less technical, though. Say, by replacing "seamless agent transfers" with something like "you can teleport between different grids as easily as you can teleport between regions -- even make friends, go shopping, and send instant messages."

Or "save necessary asset data" can be rephrased as "save the whole region and everything on it."

You might also want to add a link to New World Studio, which is by far the easiest way for someone to set up their own OpenSim minigrid.
