Asset-oriented instruction.
Goal-directed learning.
Build your professional portfolio.
Reputation as an asset.
Schools don't just give grades. They build skills. Grades don't do much for students in the world of work. Skills do. And the right skills build a portfolio of products. The skills are assets. The portfolio can document them.
Asset directed learning: skills rather than grades
- Grades don't buy the groceries. Grades are student thinking.
- Skills buy the groceries. That's breadwinner thinking.
- If students expect to develop skills, they already have a growth mindset.
- Asset based thinking is the growth mindset made flesh.
- Skills are always demonstrable.
- Skills can be shown more clearly with badges, an element of gamification.
- Badges with clearly defined skill-sets support easy demonstration of skills.
- Work products from project-based learning show what the student can do
- Conveniently: practicing a skill and demonstrating a skill are the same thing.
- The DTA will often be able to monitor and coach the practice.
- And so can develop records to serve as a basis for awarding badges.
- Work that results in products builds a portfolio for the student to use on the job market.
- Use-targeted learning plan for schools in digital worlds. Learners can pick the skills they need for the uses they intend. Gamified as a model
Suggested skills levels
- Novice
- Apprentice
- Journeyman
- Master
- These are similar to guild levels
- And to levels in some games.
- Thus they may fit to some gamification plans.
- And fit into job descriptions.

Preparing students for adult life?
What are skills needed to manage adult life?
- Goal setting, goal seeking
- Problem-solving, adaptability
- Working with others, executing a project.
- All these skills can be exercised in project-based learning.
- Challenge-based education and self-managed learning: on the same team
Goal-setting and goal-seeking
- Schools can teach goal-setting and long-term planing.
- They don't teach goal-setting if they set the goals and force them on the students.
- They don't teach long-term planning if they focus the students on passing the course.
- But they can present education as a development of skills.
- And they can show how a portfolio of credentials or products demonstrates those skills.
- Project-based education could produce useful results for the learner and for society
- Virtual worlds can host challenge-based learning
