How writers could use a web-world. Meet in a minute
Writers like to talk with other writers. They may talk marketing and learn about new marketing methods. They may talk problems and get suggestions. They may talk ideas and get brainstorming. They may talk about anything and feel a part of a writing community. But how far is it to the nearest writing community? Can you find one near you?
You can find more than one writers community in virtual worlds. And that is as near as your computer. Here is the one that I am in:
Web-worlds are well suited to interests that mainly call for people to meet in a group and talk. Web-worlds for such purposes will sort themselves by interest, so it is best to think of how particular interest groups would use them. Here I describe how people interested in writing could use a web-world for formal and informal meetings.
Writers meeting at Nara's Nook
Some of us wish for
- A writing community as near as your computer.
- Easy to visit in your browser--as easy to visit as your email.
- No password, no login. Just go to the web page a one of the meeting times.
- Pick your avatar, type the name you want to use, and walk in.
- Where we could talk in voice and text to the group or to each other.
- We can do part of that now, in virtual worlds.
- But it is not as easy as a web-world will be.
- And not as cheap as it will be on a Chromebook.
- Demo: Cybalounge updated: now with voice!

- HG Safari, week 119 Nara Nook, the writers colony on the hypergrid
To get into virtual worlds now
- NMA low tech entry path for starting in Hypergrid. HGProject
- Yes, that is complicated. It is as simple as we can make it now.
- But it is too complicated to be easy by people who have not done it.
Web-worlds coming
- We will soon be able to make it much simpler.
- We can meet in a web-world. That is a world on a web page.
- A world in a browser, as described at the top of the page.
- You go to the web page, choose an avatar, enter a name, and enter.
- For some things, you will have to register first.
- Web-worlds change the focus of virtual worlds from grids to interests.
- You go to a web page because it has something of interest to you.
- It is just like when you subscribe to Writer's Digest.
- You don't subscribe because you want a magazine.
- You subscribe because you want to read about writing.
- You can go to a web-world page because you want to find out about writing.
- That page may have a lot of information and ads about writing.
- It may even have an ad for Writer's Digest.
- But you will go there to talk to other people about writing.
Web-worlds drawing audience
- The thing that will draw people is a web-world full of people.
- Not just any people, but people interested in talking about writing.
- Yes, you can talk to people in a web-world,
- just like you talk to them in your living room.
- Some would be aspiring writers wanting to learn the trade.
- Some would be published writers ready to talk about their books.
- Some would be publishers looking for new authors.
- Some would be schools, looking for students.
- Many would have flat ads on the same web page or on the same web site.
- Flat ads are nowhere near as interesting as people, but they work 24/7.
- And flat ads are better at taking credit cards.
