Public service web-world by CybaLounge.  
Virtual worlders, this one is for us.
Cybalounge has followed up on a proposal I posted describing a preliminary web-world that could be used by public service organizations in virtual worlds to introduce the people of the flat browser world to the services they offer.  This initial world is suitable for voice conversations with people (or groups) and for presentations in voice with slides or videos.

  • The sign on the left tells how to use your arrow keys to walk and look around.
  • The sign on the right offers a choice of locations: 
  • You just click on the button and go there.
  • Meeting area with seating for ten.  
  • Presentation area with seating TBD.  Slides (text or graphics) can be shown.
  • Video might be shown there also, but there is a theater available in a connected world.
  • You don't need a special graphics card to go there. 
  • Just a modern computer and browser running HTML5.
  • It works (slowly) in my cheap ($260) laptop on the wifi in my old-folks home.

Two kinds of avatars

  • Participants are in charge of running the web-world.
  • They will have to get authorization from the world owner or lead operator.
  • They will have to be registered and have a password.
  • Participants will be able to rez things from their inventory,
  • to specialize the scene for their organization.
  • They will also be able to eject and ban.  
  • Participants will be able to have special avatars, maybe preparing their own.
  • Visitors do not need to register. 
  • They just choose an avatar and name, then enter.
  • They have no power to make changes in the world.
  • More visitor avatars may be provided.  
  • Ed Tarber may need avatar designers.  He should not have to do everything himself.
The Meeting Area
  • To sit, click a blue pose ball on a chair.
  • To talk, click the microphone in the bottom line of the world.
  • To type in text chat, click "CHAT" elsewhere in the bottom line.  
  • The main thing people will do here is talk to each other.  
  • Just like the meetings we are familiar with.  
  • Except this way we get there faster and with no cost or pat-down.
Seats ten
  • Just right for a meeting.
  • My writer's group said that they would want something like notecards.
  • We write notecards and give them out to everyone. 
  • We could use email to do that.  
  • But we may prefer something in the web-world.  Not urgent.

  • It is there in all the pictures. but hard to see against the sky.
  • We may need to print it in black.
Looking toward the presentation area
  • To move fast, hold down the shift key and press the up arrow.
Screen for presentation slides 
  • People will be able to sit on the seats later.
  • There is another world for showing videos.  
  • We could live-stream presentations there, too.  
  • The people in the web-world could chat about the presentation.
  • Without bothering the speaker.
  • This arrangement could be duplicated by getting another server.
  • So with a speaker who could draw thousands, it might take lots of servers.
  • But this system could meet that challenge.

What next?

  • The objective is to use this web world for meetings and presentations.
  • By public-service groups in virtual worlds. 
  • With these worlds, the public-service groups can reach the browser-bound.
  • Bring them into a virtual world with the skills and equipment they already have.
  • Some services (information) may be provided directly in the web-world and web site.
  • Others (community) might require real virtual worlds such as we already have.
  • But new people would know why they want to go to the trouble.
  • And they would have someone to talk them through it.

Needed

  • Use management team and plans:  many public service groups involved.
  • Avatar building services.   Maybe Marcus can help in that:
  • Marcus Milne talks about his worlds on the web
  • Detailed instruction on user-building.  I will work with Ed Tarber for this
  • Builders, coders, animators--probably working with the public service groups.

The Hypergrid WIP Show

  • The Hypergrid WIP is a one hour "show & tell" of works in progress or recently completed. 
  • Everyone is invited.  Building, scripting, promotion, entertainment-- whatever you are working on.
  • Selby will be doing test video capture of presentations in voice.  These may be posted on YouTube.

  • Presentations are in voice and text.  
  • For text presentations, best bring the text in a notecard and paste it into chat.  
  • Voice presentations may be captured in video.  
  • Stills and videos from the show may appear in this blog and elsewhere.
