Converting lecture classes to online for efficient use of teacher time. 

A lecture without the internet

• Giving the same lecture every semester is inefficient, wastes teacher time.
• A 50 minute lecture is not good design for learning, it is designed for efficient student movement.
• There is another way, especially suited for online learning:

Model for many freshman "lecture" classes

• Break the lecture in 10 minute sections on video, each with its own learning objectives (LO).
• The sections are like the sections in a textbook or the points in a PowerPoint lecture
• For each LO, make up a set of test items that evaluate level of achievement.
• Revise the sections as they need an update.

Use a digital teaching assistant

• Provide a digital teacher assistant (DTA) to manage individual learning by each student.
• Student assignment: Check in with your DTA and watch the 10 minute lecture.
• Then take the test.
• Each section should take about 20 minutes.
• A student should aim to complete 15 sections per week.
• A student completes a section by watching the video, asking the DTA questions (if needed), and passing almost all of the test items.
• The DTA monitors progress for each student and advises the student and the teacher.
• The DTA handles routine questions, using keyword search  of the FAQ database.
• Questions the DTA cannot handle are passed to the teacher.
• The teacher answers the question and may update the FAQ database.

Students who do not pass

• Are assigned another lecture or text on the same content and retested on completion.
• (The retest should not duplicate the previous test.)
• On a second failure the DTA would as for help from the teacher.

Benefits of this model

For the teacher

• Teacher does not waste time presenting duplicate lectures.
• Teacher gets prompt feedback on the effectiveness of each section.
• Teacher does not have to handle routine questions.
• Teacher can focus on students really having problems.
• Teacher can improve the course over multiple years and possibly market it later.

For the student

• Students study in blocks of time that better fit their attentions span.
• Students study at times best suited to them--can fit it in with work
• Students get the attention of the teacher when they really need it.
• Quick learners do not waste time while the teacher helps the slow learners.
