Engaging in a hobby can lead to acquiring substantial skill, knowledge and experience. Games certainly fit in there.  But so do a lot of other things in Second Life.  For example:
Hobbies, surely.  Games, no. The difference between a hobby and a game?  
  • Game: Somebody sets the goals for you
  • Hobby: You set your own goals
  • Game: Somebody makes the rules for you
  • Hobby: You and reality make your own rules.
Some people in Second Life are running a business.  
  • Renting land to other residents
  • Selling equipment, services, or consumer goods
  • Providing entertainment
Some people in Second Life are professionals
  • Educators
  • Writers
  • Musicians 
  • Social networkers
  • Web site technicians
