2014 EDU: OPENSIM: VIBE: Virtual Islands for Better Education: Features for educators

VIBE: Virtual Islands for Better Education:
Features for educators
The Virtual Islands for Better Education, VIBE, is a collaborative collection of college and K-12 educators and virtual world builders looking to leverage OpenSim for learning activities--Stephen Gasior (Stephen Xootfly in SL)
-
  • You can probably run your own OpenSim grid at little cost.
  • If you work at an institution that offers computer support.
  • You don't  have to go it alone.
  • You can work with other educators via the hypergrid.
  • You can bring in guest instructors from around the world.
  • You can import products--educational products--from other places.
  • You can make and sell educational products to other educators.
  • You can send your students to educational places around the world.
  • You can do all this at very low cost.
  • VIBE can help you

News and Notes

Advantages of running your own OpenSim Site

  • You can limit access to those people that you want or can allow.
  • You can be reasonably sure that your site will be running when you schedule it.
  • You can move your content to another location when you need to.
  • You can duplicate your content at little or no cost.
  • Network speed is faster when the site is hosted locally
  • You can record and analyze whatever performance data you wish.
  • You don't have to pay an outside vendor.
  • Your content is yours.  You may (should) be able to report it as a publication.
  • You can cite it in your resume', portfolio, or job application.
  • You control backup and restore.
  • You can offer your content for reuse or purchase.
  • You can do this without being a Geek.
  • Because the Geeks have already been there.

Advantages of a  spedialized grid aggregator like VIBE

  • Managing your own servers has a steep learning curve.
  • Even with a computer services unit to handle the basic tech.
  • With a specialized grid aggregator like VIBE:
  • You get help from people who are doing it.  These people:
  • Know how to find content, even specialized content.
  • Know how to find good content creators.
  • Have relevant content they may be able to share.
  • Know what software works in virtual worlds.

What specialized grid aggregators can offer

  • Common entry instruction in web pages and entry points.
  • Live help at entry points
  • Shared conference areas
  • Common service areas:
  • Sandboxes
  • Libraries
  • Hypergrid cluster via hypergates in commons area.
  • Demonstration areas (free and commercial products)
  • Shared visibility and

Grids in VIBE

Grids include biology, archaeology, public health, european union history, a massive creative commons searchable library and a kids centered grid.  There are also public sandboxes that act as a commons area.

How to handle a Hypergrid address

From any Hypergrid-enabled grid, paste the address into the address bar of Firestorm and press enter. Or paste it into the world map search bar of any viewer, search, and click Teleport when the destination is found. If it doesn't work, don't give up. Try again later. Some hypergrid destinations are offline part of the day.
If you get a address that looks like this:
hg.francogrid.org:80:Residence-09:/119/128/190 it may take you to the exact coordinates if you paste it into the address bar of Firestorm

Mission:  Flying Saucers Return is a proof of concept project to demonstrate and document the feasibility of a plan to produce a video series in virtual worlds.  A video series requires, and the plan includes both the writing and the video production.    If the plan proves to be feasible, FSR may result in a commercial venture (thus separating from NMA, but with some of the same people.)   #FlyingSaucersReturn
