2017 OSHG: EDU: PEOPLE: What can visitors do in a web-world if nobody is there?

What can visitors do in a Cybalounge web-world 
if nobody is there?
A web-world can best provide an opportunity for informal conversation between people.  But it can't have hosts there all the time.  Here are some ideas for giving people something relevant to do if  they come at a time when there is no live host.
Web-world for nonprofits 
and public service organizations
  • The best element on a web page is a person.
  • Not just a video, but somebody you can have a conversation with.
  • But you can't have people available all the time.
  • The cooperative web-world for Nonprofit Commons is part of a solution.  
  • Time-share the use of the space.  
  • Multiple organizations can make better use of the space.
  • And people coming to the web-world often find someone to talk to.
  • Often, but not always.  What do they do while waiting?

    Urgent help

    • People would come to the public service web-world via a web-page.
    • They probably come because they are interested in a service represented there.
    • Some of those interests may come from important and urgent needs.
    • So we must be sure they have a route to continue if no one is there to help them.
    • Hence, I suggest the Mailbot

    Mailbot plan

    The system will send emails to current managers, announcing a visitor.
    It could send other email carrying a copy of what the person puts in chat.

     Perhaps the algorithm would be:

    • Mailbot sign
    • On visitor entry 
    • If no other person present after 20 seconds
    • Call Mailbot 
    • {Mailbot can be a sign with a name like "Marty the Mail Bot"}
    Mailbot says: "Welcome to my world.  No one is here right now, but if you click me, I will copy what you say in chat in the next 30 Sec. and send it to the managers. If you want an email reply, be sure to give an email address."
    On cliick chatbot 
    LIsten 30 sec,
    If chat log not empty, send chat log to manager list
    clear chat log

    Each manager group would have its own mail bot with its own manager list.  Entry notifications might be put in the mailbot, since that task needs the same list of managers.

    Use practice:   Each organization will have its own site, with signs, links, and mailbot with the addresses selected for that organization.   There will be an existing mailbot script, to be specialized by each user with email addresses and inserted text.

    Non-urgent help

    For people with no-urgent interests, organizations will probably want to offer a little education about their mission.  Signs are just a matter of uploading a texture and putting it on a square prim.   (Yes, Cybalounge uses the prim metaphor.)

    "Fitted" pairs

    • Encourage "fitted" pairs: parent-adolescent, elderly person and caregiver, etc.
    • The visit may be planned by one member of the pair to educate the other member.
    • The advantage that web-worlds offer is that the pair can talk to each other.
    • A web-world can be designed to create a "teaching" moment.  

    Presentations, audio or video

    • A web-world is actually a web page.  
    • It can access audio or video at the touch of a button.
    • To present a video, you probably get a video screen from the office supply site.
    • It will play any video that will play on the browser.
    • No ten-second limit on audio.  
    • If you are informing the public, you could could use Q+A signs.

    Ask an expert

    • On click, the sign opens a field for text entry.
    • Visitor provides email, if desired, for private response.
    • Questions (anonymous) and answers are posted in the web-world site.
    • They remain there for a short time.
    • Questions/answers are also posted on a blog from the site.
    • The can remain there for years.
    • The blog (if in Blogger) can be set up for keywords and search.  
    • Thus the blog results can be curated.

    Ask a counselor, life coach, etc.

    • Patterned after newspaper advice columns like Ask Amy
    • But with professional level responses (and references)
    • Management would be similar to Ask an expert above

    Instructional games

    • Some visitors will have nothing urgent. 
    • Perhaps they will be interested in an instructional game.
    • A public service organization probably has fact-bits to teach the public.
    • A short quiz offers an opportunity for micro-learning.  
    • If a quiz is scored, it works as a game.  
    • If several people come in together, the game could be competitive.
    • Following are some examples of quiz games that might be useful.

    Extent of the problem

    • Questions might look like this:
    • "What fraction of the US public seeks help for (insert)?"
    • Insert here stands for something the public service organization deals with.
    • Other questions might deal with cost, time cost, number affected, etc.
    • This kind of quiz is likely to be followed by a plea for action:
    • Donate, download an app, email a legislator,

    Get the facts

    • Questions might look like this:
    • Do you believe this: (insert statement, get yes-no answer)?
    • What fraction of the public believes this (insert number choices)? 
    • Answers:  X percent of the public believes this.
    • The experts say: (insert)
    • Your answer matched the experts (or did not).
    • You got X answers right.  The public would get Y answers right.
    • You (overestimated, underestimated) the public's knowledge on this.
    • The score for the public is the percent of the public that believes the statement.
    • The score for the person is the  number of choices that match the experts.
    • One player competes against the public.  
    • Multiple players compete against each other.

    The Hypergrid WIP Show

    • The Hypergrid WIP is a one hour "show & tell" of works in progress or recently completed. 
    • Everyone is invited.  Building, scripting, promotion, entertainment-- whatever you are working on.
    • Selby will be doing test video capture of presentations in voice.  These may be posted on YouTube.

    • For text presentations, best bring the text in a notecard and paste it into chat.  
    • Voice presentations may be captured in video.
