The NPC web-world:
more details and suggestions
more details and suggestions
Following up on the public opening of the Nonprofit Commons Web-world, we here offer more details of the planned operation and ask for feedback on what we need to do to bring the world into usable condition.
Here is my avatar in the NPC web-world
- Public service web-world by CybaLounge
- 3D web-worlds of the browser (Google+ group)
- Nonprofit Commons
- Unofficial web-world meeting: 9:50 - 10:30 California time daily
- I expect to be there most days. If my avatar is there, say something aloud.
- If no one is there I may be looking at another browser page.
- I won't promise much conversation if you are not using voice.
- Drop in and let's talk about your ideas for using this web-world
Learning curves
- If you know how to use a browser,
- the learning curve for visitor is almost flat.
- -
- If you are familiar with virtual worlds,
- being a host should be easy.
Features added
- Web links in chat are clickable to open the page.
- Stop animation button moved to be clear of text area.
- Lighthouse beam no longer moves (was distracting to some people).
Services for visitors
Services for visitors
- Bottom of the world screen
- Left side mostly offers services available to visitors.
- I see hover text in full screen, not in restore down.
- Far left: Chat button, chat field, send button.
- Next: open chat window
- Next: Microphone: Turn on/off your microphone.
- Next: Camera: Release camera to follow cursor. Undo: Escape key.
- Next: Tools: Not for visitors.
- Next: 3 figures: find nearby people.
- Next: Push-pin: Other locations. Here, movie theater.
How can we use it?
- It is in public alpha now and not ready for participants.
- Nonprofit Commons will manage usage.
- Dieter Heyne manages the software.
- Organizations will work with Nonprofit Commons to get time slots in the world.
- In those time slots, they will have one or more people there as hosts.
- The hosts can place posters relevant to their organization.
- The web-world will be most effective if it has people there much of the time.
Visitors and hosts
- Visitors do not log in.
- They just choose and avatar and enter the name they want to use, and click enter
- They can move around, sit, talk in voice, chat in text, look around, and little else.
- They can click on links to open another chat page.
- They can copy chat to the local clipboard.
- (To select, double-click on the start point, hold down shift, click on the end point.)
- -
- Hosts must be authorized and log in with a password.
- They will represent an organization and have a set time to host in the web-world.
- They have an inventory and can make changes to the web-world.
- They can eject a visitor and may be able to IP ban visitors.
- They may be able to silence a visitor without banning.
- The system for loggging in hosts is not operational yet.
Hosting organizations-- responsibilities
- Nonprofit Commons will approve the host organizations and time slots.
- Time slots will be in one- or two-hour segments.
- An organization may take a slot every day at the same time.
- Or it may take a slot every weekday at the same time.
- These schedules will be the easiest to promote.
- But other schedules, like Mondays at 3 pm California time will also be available.
- -
- One or more hosts should be available in the web-world during the host time.
- Hosts do not have to be attending the web-world all that time.
- If the have it open in a browser tab, people can speak
- We may add a bell to indicate someone new has entered.
- Hosts will have powers to manage the world.
- The powers may only work during the organization's host time.
Is this limited to legal nonprofits?
Despite the name, the web-world will probably not be limited to legal nonprofits. Other public service groups will probably be welcome. We would especially be interested in groups engaged in open source developments, even if they are commercial. My office hours, sort of
I will try to be there almost every day around 10 am California time. If my avatar is there, say something aloud. If no one is there I may be looking at another browser page. I won't promise much conversation if you are not using voice. I will stay till 10:30 California time, or longer if needed. Why not just make your own web-world?
- One word: Aggregation
- What fraction of the day would you have people there?
- Unless it has people there most of the time, many of your visitors will be disappointed.
- The public service web-world will have multiple groups.
- Ideally, the collective groups will have people in the web-world much of the time.
- Even if visitors are looking for a different service, they will find friendly people to talk to.
- And you will be helping to build the reputation of Public Service Worlds.
- We want Public Service Worlds to be the go-to place for finding help.
- "Need help? Ask Public Service Worlds. We know the helpers."
We need to work on chat and other text communication
Needs (so far identified)
- Everyone needs the equivalent of notecards and file transfer.
Development
- We are seeking user input here:
