Self-managed learning and the role of the online library
Updated 11/28/2016

A library is a school for self-managed learning. An online library can bring that school to your home computer.  What else you need to manage your own learning?-- Selby Evans

  • Once you have heard a lecture on swimming, you never forget what you learned about lectures

Adult learning

  • Adults learn better when they know how the training program would benefit them.
  • They are motivated by external rewards such as increase in wages, promotions, etc.
  • They are also motivated by intrinsic factors such as the need for self-esteem and power, increase in responsibilities, and so on.
  • Adult learners like the learning to solve their problems.
  • They value learning content which is relevant to their needs.
  • They want to learn at the place, time, and pace of their choice.

What can an online library do?

  • Provide complete sets of learning objectives for recognized job categories.
  • Provide links to instructional materials that fit those objectives.
  • Provide links to qualified online mentors for learners who need help
  • Provided links to sources that will test and certify readiness in job categories.
  • Provide links to employers who offer jobs in these categories.
  • Host study groups for people who prefer to study in groups.
  • Digital Learning with Simon Nelson. Social, collaborative, self-managed learning
