2016 HG: HELP: The unicode problem: Unicode can cause problems in HG addresses and maybe elsewhere.

The unicode problem:  Unicode can cause problems in HG addresses and maybe elsewhere.
When a HG address in unicode is pasted into a G+ post, it remains unicode.  If a user copy/pastes that address into the World Map to go to that destination, the unicode may not be recognized, with the result that the response is "Not found."  This will confuse newcomers and may keep them from getting to the event.  Several suggestions for fixing the problem are offered.

The problem I ran into

  • I had this HG address:  hg.zangrid.ch:8002:partyland
  • I copy/pasted from the G+ post.  I got Not found.  
  • With some investigation, I discovered that it worked if I typed partyland.
  • But not if I copy/pasted.  No problem for me.
  • But NubieTubie, one of my head-alts, told me that he would have given up,
  • concluding that this was too complicated for him.
  • The same word works when typed, but not when pasted.

Unicode 

Unicode: an international encoding standard for use with different languages and scripts, by which each letter, digit, or symbol is assigned a unique numeric value that applies across different platforms and programs.

        Fixing for Nubie

        • I don't want Nubie running into problems that make him give up.
        • So I looked into the problem.
        • Some of my astute readers have already guessed the answer:
        • Obviously, Watson, it is not the same word.  It just looks the same.
        • The original, the one you copy/paste from, is in Unicode.  
        • To show that, just try to save it in MS notepad.  

        Why do we care?

        • It is just a minor problem.  We know a work-around.  
        • But it is a big problem to those of us who want Nubie to stay in HG.
        • And maybe an important problem to hosts trying to bring in people via the HG.

        What can we do? 

        • Firestorm and OpenSimulator Devs:  Can you add code to handle unicode?
        • Promoters: If your machine uses unicode, you may want to get the HG address from a machine that does not use unicode.
        • Promoters:  If you don't provide a valid HG address, you aren't inviting the HG.

              Those not properly supporting Unicode text in their software are woefully behind the times. ASCII is long dead, and Unicode is/has been it's replacement for a rather long time now.
