2016 BIZ: PEOPLE: Land for rent in Kitely on a rural residential sim. Ann Tree Prenyour comments

Land for rent in Kitely on a rural residential sim.
Ann Tree Prenyour comments
Ann Tree Prenyour has been bugging me to write an article about land rentals on the hypergrid, so I was glad to find a rental offering by Ozwell Wayfarer.   Here I give a brief report of the offer and then a transcript of my discussion with Ann.

    • Q: What happened to the Friday event notices you were carrying twice a month?
    • A: They weren't drawing enough interest and alternative sources came online.  I am now running a short  form daily near the top of this blog. A more comprehensive collection is in  Selby's daily news collection.

Ann Tree Prenyour:  I am glad to see that.  Rental property is an unmet need on the hypergrid. And so is promotion.
          -
Selby: Do you think there is much demand for either of those?
          -
Ann: There you go again with that static thinking.  Demand is what you make it.  And how you price it.  That's why you have advertizing and marketing.  People don't demand anything they don't know about or can't afford.  You create demand by pricing it right and telling people why they want it.
          -

           -
Selby: Okay.  Why do people want rental property?
          -
Ann:  Test run, no commitment.  Start in a pretty place that you don't have to fix up. Start with neighbors and amenities that suit you.
          -
          Selby: Not everybody?
          -
Ann:  Of course not everybody, professor Obvious.  If everybody wanted it, you wouldn't have to promote it.  That's why marketers always ask about target markets.
          -
Selby:  So the target market here would probably the new people coming into HG.
          -
Ann:  Or anybody who doesn't have land.  But, yes, you would pick newcomers as your target market because that's a group you could probably pitch your ad to.
          -
Selby: Pitch?  Does that mean arrange to get it in front of them or write it to fit their interests?
          -
Ann:  Both.   As the saying goes, it is not smart to jump half-way across a cesspool.  You go with something like, "If you get a sim, you get a fixer-upper.  Rent a plot from us and we already did the  landscape for you to enjoy."
          -
          -
Selby:  You follow that with a picture of the beautiful landscape.
          -
Ann: No.  You follow that with a picture of people enjoying that landscape.  It is not about landscapes.  It's about people.
          -
Selby: And how do you get it in front of newcomers?
          -
Ann:   You gotta know the territory.   Where would you find newcomers?

          -
Selby: Grid welcome sites, freebie places, well promoted events, beginner classes.
          -
          Ann:  Nothing in the outworld?
          -
Selby:  Well, grid registration pages--newcomers have to pass through there.  But I doubt that you could put ads there.
          -
Ann: Shut up talking about obstacles when you're thinking of ideas.   You'll wake up your Canter, he'll tell you all the reasons why you can't do anything, and you will get your brain clogged.  You're a psychologist--you should know that.
          -
Selby:  I do, but I forgot.  I'll try stick to ideas for now.
          -
Ann:  Right.  Never worry about why it won't work.  Just tell your friends.  They will tell you why it won't work.  That's what friends are for.
          -
Selby:  Okay, we had newcomers at grid registration pages just before they got to be newcomers.  We were looking for places to market to them in the outworld.
          -
Ann:  Where were they before they got to the registration page?
          -
Selby:  They were either at a Google search result or at some other page offering a link to the registration page.
          -
Ann:  Why would they would have been searching for a virtual-world grid on the hypergrid?  Probably because they already were in a closed virtual-world grid and wanted to try out the hypergrid.
          -
Selby:  So potential newcomers to hypergrid can be found in virtual world communities.  There are some such communities in Facebook, Google+, and other social media.  And social media promotion is free.
Ann:  It's only free if your time is worth nothing.  But it is cheap.  And sending to more places is almost cost free.
          -
Selby:  So he could post an announcement of the offering in several of those places.

Ann:  Don't bother with one announcement.  Think ad campaign.
          -
          Selby:  That means multiple ads.
          -
Ann:  Or multiple posts. We're talking social media, not television.  And not the same posts repeatedly.  He would offer the dollar-a month rental one time, satisfied customer the next, maybe a new waterfall, some birds and songs.
          -
Selby:  The story of the build.  That worked for Disney on Disneyland.  But we are talking a big marketing effort.  He is only offering ten plots.
          -
Ann:  Not enough to market.  You have to go big to make marketing worth the cost.  That's why you aggregate--well, not you, we.  The people from my family.  And, by the way, there is another place to market to new people.  But that is for another discussion.  We marketers want to tell one thing at a time.
          -
Selby (to audience): I'll get her to talk about that another time.  But meanwhile, maybe somebody else will figure it out and post about in the comments here.
