VWBPE Gateway - Experience report

Busy Gateway

The VWBPC Gateway served as the entry point and information center the convention. A lot of traffic came through the gateway. Fortunately, we had help from the the Phoenix Wave team and some others people from the RHN Q & A group. The Phoenix Wave team has great resources in multilingual help for new people.
-
We had defense in depth on this -- if we got heavily loaded at the gateway, we could put out a call for help through the RHN Q & A group group chat. We could even call for help in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German--and usually get it.
-
This way of bringing people into second life worked well. People came in with a specific goal and the helpers a the gateway could usually help them get to it rather quickly.
-
We also (unexpectedly) had a lot of new people arriving with no idea that they were coming to a conference.
-
This bit of serendipity suggested to me that event-related gateways may have some additional benefits. The event concentrates a large number of newcomers. That makes it easy to concentrate a number of mentors, like the Phoenix Wave team. But once you have a gathering of mentors, they are available to accommodate any newcomers.
-
We could set up temporary welcome portals for any event that is likely to attract new people into Second Life. We have portable gateway resources. We could easily make more and put them in rezzers, so we can set up a newcomer welcome site in a few minutes.
-
Many of us are using Facebook and Twitter to promote events in Second Life. Perhaps we could look for some event (like VWBPE) where we could explicitly promote that we have newcomer accommodations before and during the event. Promote it as effectively as was done with VWBPE. Thought for the day--or month.
