9th Annual Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education 2016 poster sessions (2)

The donation and creation of Renaissance Island is the first attempt by the Info Island library group to create an immersive, engaging multidisciplinary environment. The focus of the island is Tudor, Britain (1485-1603), though it may expand beyond this in the future, possibly to the Stewart period. In addition to providing an immersive educational experience, Renaissance Island also avails living quarters to residents wanting to spend time in Tudor, Britain. Immersive environments such as this engage learners and supplement the classroom experience.
-
Participants may role play, participate in some other way, or simply observe. Alliance Library System staff have collaborated with educators and their students in such disciplines as drama, literature, history, library science, and architecture as well as other specialists and aficionados to develop Renaissance Island. Renaissance Island is somewhat unique in that the entire island is the classroom, and there are so many residents who collaborate and have a rich diversity of backgrounds. Role playing is combined with learning.
- Renaissance Island’s Parish of Reading Primley (named through a collaborative process) includes cottages, shops above which the merchants may live, a market square/cross, church, bulwark, galleon, manor house, knot garden, kitchen garden, town green, classroom, and the Globe Theatre.
- There are also library resources available on a variety of pertinent topics. The library, located at Lagswell Manor, was initially developed by a library technical assistant student serving her practicum on Renaissance Island. Additional resources are embedded in the actual buildings and some of the parish objects, for which residents, librarians, students, and educators have collaborated to build and inform.
Please contact Amza Hydraconis in Second Life for information on arranging tours, visits, or use of any of the buildings for classes.

Student Opportunities
The Island is very much a work in progress. Accuracy and authenticity are encouraged and sought, but it is not perfect, yet. This actually provides an opportunity for students to hone their critical thinking skills. What is out-of-place? Challenge students to find them and make suggestions. Beyond walking along all-too-clean Tudor streets, entering the Globe, or reviewing the library resources in the manor house there are opportunities for student involvement. In addition to students enrolled in courses, there are educational and cultural events offered for Second Life residents. Renaissance Island is very much a place where informal learning, as well as formal learning, occurs. We would like to be able to offer Renaissance Island Residents and the overall Second Life community a series of lectures by scholars on period topics. Please contact Amza Hydraconis in Second Life for information on arranging tours, visits, or use of any of the buildings for classes.
