The Hypergrid Welcome Center.
An element of the HGProjects
Updated 12/7/2015

Now, I'm a delighted resident of the hyperverse. Back then, the idea was planted: there should be a welcome area for people new to the hypergrid. A place where they can get help, learn the tricks I now take for granted and a guiding hand to navigate that initial confusion.
-
Now that I have 'arrived', so to speak, I think it is time to give body to that idea.
-
Please help me build a grid-agnostic welcome center, together with a web presence, to ease the transition from closed grids to the hypergrid. Let's make the hypergrid a more welcoming place! Tom Frost

An element of the HGProjects
Updated 12/7/2015
Tom Frost proposed development of a Hypergrid welcome center and it has stirred much interest in the HG community. This is an element that I think is much needed to support the promotion and growth of the Hypergrid. Here I present Tom's proposal and offer some preliminary considerations.
Proposal by Tom Frost
When I arrived on the hypergrid about a year ago, fresh from Second Life, I was confused. Disoriented. Things didn't work as I expected, and it took quite some perseverance before I 'got it'.-

- Google+ community: Hypergrid welcome center
- Question Tom posed to this community:
- What is your concept of a Hypergrid Welcome Center.
- What would it look like, what resources would it offer?
- At the top of my wish list on that: A place with friendly people.
- HG Welcome Center. HGProjects. Possible content and presentation
- (More after the break)

Welcoming new people on the Hypergrid
Three types of newcomer background
- People experienced in Second Life, but not in Hypergrid/OpenSim
- People experienced in other virtual worlds
- People with no experience in any virtual world
- Each type needs needs different welcome instruction.
- This article will focus on people from SL
-
- People from SL come with expectations from SL experiences.
- If they don't know how to do things, they think there is now way.
- If things don't work as expected, they think they are broken.
- (They came from SL, you remember.)
Two parts to the HGWC
- Hypergrid Welcome Center (HGWC) is online instruction.
- Online instruction is planned as content and presentation.
- Content is what you want the learner to be able to do when finished.
- Presentation is the experience you provide to build the abilities you aim for.
- Content is the same for everyone.
- Presentation can come in multiple forms, especially in a multimedia world.
- Multiple presentation forms may let learners select what best fits their needs.
Content development for HGWC
- In the new age of instructional design, content development starts with the objectives.
- (Yes, that is how you do software development, too.)
- We want people finishing the HGWC to be able to make effective use of the HG
- for their purposes.
- They will come with expectations about doing things they did in SL.
- Those expectations will lead to questions that we can gather.
- The list of those questions is one quick way to collect some learning objectives.
- We want to provide useful answer to these questions.
- "The learner can do what the question asks how to do."
HG specific Q/A for the SL experienced people, preliminary list
- How do you travel on the Hypergrid?
- How do you find places to visit on the HG?
- How do you find people on the HG?
- How do you find events on the HG?
- How do you find free things on the HG?
- Do your clothes come with you on the HG?
- How do you take stuff with you travelling the HG?
- Can you friend people you meet in travel on the HG?
- Do IMs work over the HG?
- Do notecards travel over HG?
- Can I send inventory items by dropping them in IM?
- How do I get Lindens, or whatever you use for money?
- more (TBD)
- This list is just a start. You can suggest more items in comments to this article.
- I will collect the questions and later try to answer them.
- The questions, with answers, will provide one section of content for the HGWC.
- Another section will cover features unknown in Second Life.
- Example: How to with NPC, Nara Malone. Storytelling of the future
Presentation methods for HGWC
- The internet has broken the meaning of school.
- A school is not a place anymore.
- It is a gathering of learning opportunities.
- The same is true for the Hypergrid Welcome Center.
- The opportunities can be presented in multiple places.
- On blogs, on a wiki, on web pages, in social media. In other words on the web,
- where people can access in with skills and equipment they already have.
- They can access it in multiple places inworlds. In any grid, including Second Life.
- They can access it in many formats. Text, video, audio, demo, dramatization.
- A single location for a HG Welcome Center would be of value
- if it could have people there most of the time.
Is a single place needed?
- The main reason for a single place is to have people there.
- This blog will carry whatever content can be presented on the web.
- Web content: Text, Videos, Calendars, web links, web pages on a prIm.
- Any content I produce is CC Attribution only.
- Inworld objects can be replicated without limit.
- An inworld HGWC might consist of a model WC with parts free to copy.
- If we can have a welcoming group available at a single place.
- a single place would be a real advantage.
