Here is a collection of starter help for basic skills needed in Second Life and similar virtual worlds. Since there are multiple viewers, there are some places where the help has to be viewer-specific. The help applies to the current Second Life standard viewer (3,2) and the version of Phoenix offered in SpotON3D as available in the Facebook plugin (SpotON3D App). Other information may be added later.

Vocabulary:
- Asset: Something (notecard, object, landmark, etc.) that is kept in your inventory.
- User Interface (UI): Buttons and other controls that let the user make things happen.
- Click, click on, touch: Put your cursor on an object, press and release the left mouse key
- Inworld: the virtual world
- Inventory: Collection of things you own.
- Outworld: the physical world
- Left mouse key (for Mac users) The single mouse key.
- Link: As with the web, a button that will open a web page, or a place in Second Life.
- Notecard: A file carrying text and (possibly) embedded assets. It will be in your inventory, in the Notecard folder. Double click on the name of the notecard to see the contents.
- Double-click Move: Optional feature to move you automatically to a place you can see.
- ClickNWalk: Walk your avatar to a place by a single-click on the place..

- Read signs
- Click on signs and other things (get notecards)
- Look around: Zoom and roam your camera*
- Put your cursor on what you want in the center of the picture.
- Press Alt and hold it down. The cursor will change to a rectangle with a plus sign in it.
- Scroll back and forth with the mouse scroll wheel;
- Press each of the arrow keys you normally use to move;
- Press page up and page down.
- Learn from what happens when you make these moves
- Press Esc to return to normal camera view
- See, Zoom, roam, and tag
Move
- Double-click on the place you want to go (on the ground or on the map)*.
- Walk: press the up arrow key.
- Turn: press the arrow key pointing in the turn direction
- Sit: Right click on the object., select sit. Note Stand up button

- Typed chat, Local chat
- V3.2 Local chat (typed) button (talk bubble)
- Phoenix (SpotON) Type and enter chat on chat line (bottom left).
- Open chat history (up arrow right of chat bar)
- Voice chat
- V3.2 Speak button (Microphone)
- SpotON: Talk button, Bottom right.
- With headphones: Click the lock to leave the microphone on.
- With loudspeakers, turn microphone off when other people speak.
- Remember, when your microphone is on, people can hear any sounds in the room.
- Adjust volume for any person: V3.2 Voice settings button (headphones)
- Mute a person. Dealing with other avatars
- Respond to Instant Messages V2.3
- You get a notice when someone sends you an instant message.
- The text of the message will be displayed for a short time.
- Then it will become a small graphic at the upper right of your window.
- Click on the graphic to open the IM window.
- To reply, type in the white bar at the bottom of the IM window, then press enter
- Accept, and use notecards
- People may send you notecards
- You may click on an object that will send you a notecard
- You get a notice that you got a notecard
- If so, click Show to accept the notecard.

- If the notecard is not displayed to you
- Open your inventory. V3.2 Inventory button (suitcase)
- If you don't see the notecard, click Recent (Top tab) and click the Notecard folder
- Double-click on the notecard to open it
- Notecards can carry other assets embedded in them
- To use an asset embedded in a notecard, click once on the name or graphic.
- To use an asset from inventory: Double-click on it
- Create a contact list
- Offer friend link to someone present.
- Right click avatar, look in the menu.
- Offer friend link to someone you know by name.
- Click search button, select people, enter name
- V3.2 Search button (magnifying glass)
- Recognize and use web links in text
- A link to a web page can be included in various text communications
- Places where you may find links: Local chat, Instant Messages (personal and group), profiles, object messages
- Cue: A web link will be in a color different from the general text.
- Action: Click on the link to open the web page.
- Notes: The colors may be different in different places.
