A game has the critical elements of a typical story. There is a quest, a series of barriers to be overcome, and a resolution. Indeed most effective presentations use those elements.

I think games or short stories provide excellent models for the broad structure of project planning -- or of any unit of achievement. You could say that games and stories are a tool for for cultural instruction on how to accomplish things. Instruction by example. Learn by doing. Set a goal (quest). Plan a set of steps that go from where you are to where you want to be.

Now if we could just find a way of helping people move from games to something that pays for groceries...
