Imprudence - Content backup and transfer
-
Here is the claim:
"In Imprudence 1.2 and later, you can export objects that you have created inworld, save them on your hard drive, and import them again later. This allows creators to keep backups of things they have created, so they can be sure their creations won't be lost by an asset server problem.
You can also use this feature to move your creations from one grid to another! For example, you could build in the comfort of your own OpenSim (with free and fast texture uploads), then import the final version to SL. Or, you could export something you've already created in SL, and move it to an OpenSim grid to expand into a new audience or market."

From Second Life to Inworldz
The devil in the details
-
I did an export from Second Life to InWorldz. Folllowing are my explorer notes.
-
Transfer objects.
An extra item in the Imprudence menu (pie menu for objects) is the command "Export." So I clicked on one of my objects, found the Export command and click it. Sure enough, Imprudence offered to create the file in my documents folder. I set up an Imprudence folder and had it save the file (XML) there.
The counterpart Import command is in the main File menu. You click on Import Object or Import + Upload..
-
Import Object is probably only useful if you were importing to the same grid that the object came from. You might do this if you were seeking to restore a lost object.
-
Import + Upload.. is the command you would need to import an object exported from a different grid. In some transfers that would result in uploading the texture(s) that were exported with the object.
-
In transfers from Second Life, the export of textures by this method is apparently prohibited so all I could transfer from Second Life to InWorldz was an object. But the objects came through fully linked and with color properties intact.
-
Scripts and notecards
No contents were transferred along with the objects. But there are alternatives: Imprudence will download and upload scripts (and notecards) as separate operations. You have to put the scripts and notecards back into the objects.
-
To download
Open the script (or notecard) for editing.
In the script editing window, select "File > Save to Disk”
Or edit the notecard, in editing window, select "File > Save to Disk”
Follow the instructions in the File Save window.
-
To upload
Open a new script (in an object> new script) or notecard (inventory>create notecard).
Select "File > Load from Disk" from the edit window.
Select the script or notecard to upload from the file select window that opens. (Windows: Notecards will be .txt files, scripts will be .lsl files).
-
Not all scripts from Second Life will run in other grids. I am currently importing my main utility scripts to InWorldz and will be reporting on what happens.
-
Conclusions
“allows creators to keep backups of things they have created” True of objects, scripts, and notecards, each taken separately. Probably true of textures except for Second Life.
-
“export something you've already created in SL, and move it to an OpenSim grid to expand into a new audience or market." True of objects, scripts, and notecards, each taken separately.
“build in the comfort of your own OpenSim (with free and fast texture uploads), then import the final version to SL.” Partly true with caveats.
-
Caveats: Untested as of now. Can all builds done in Open Sim grids be imported in SL? Are textures transferred on the object or do you have to reapply them after the transfer? Are there important script limitations on what works in both worlds.

Textures
You will probably have the textures saved on your computer. But you can download any textures in you inventory that are yours or full perm. The instructions (Viewer 1 and Viewer 2) for doing this in Second Life are given in my webpage:
-
-
Upload textures in Imprudence just as you do in Second Life. You may or may not be charged the 10 Lindens (or equivalent).
