Caledon expands to Blue Mars

Caledon expands to Blue Mars.
-
Caledon is a highly successful private continent in Second Life, especially notable for the retention rate at its newcomer gateway (before the community gateway was abandoned by Linden Lab).  Caledon may be well suited for Blue Mars because many of its residents are not interested in building.
-
Linden Lab must find the move worrisome because a number of current residents of Second Life Caledon, will surely investigate the Blue Mars version.   Indeed, the fact that Desmond Shang is taking Blue Mars seriously, lends credibility to Blue Mars as a serious competitor to Second Life.

Blue Mars Blog: Blue World Notes: Desmond "the Guvnah" Shang Explains the Appeal of Steampunk in Virtual Worlds
"His goal was to create something in opposition to the bling bling nightclubs and the strange sex palaces you might otherwise find in a virtual world. “I've always loved [steampunk] literature and the sort of 'parody' aspect of it all. One can't really take empire building too seriously in this context. So, yes, as opposed to the heavy drama, the naughtiness, all that, the wild time traveler from the past stands in stark contrast to everything overbearing and too serious in virtual worlds these days.”"

Caledon in Second Life

Steampunk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1] Specifically, steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century and often Victorian era Britain—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them; in other words, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne or real technologies like the computer but developed earlier in an alternate history."

Caledon is a member of the Virtual Railway Consortium:
-
"A passenger railway system spanning the whole of Caledon. The original main line begins across from the telehub in Caledon II and terminates in Caledon Primverness. The main station is Victoria Station at the Guvnah's Palace in Caledon Victoria City, where the first and second main lines cross.
-

-
The second main line runs from Caledon Loch Avie through Victoria City and northwards to Caledon Penzance, thence westward through the mountains and Tanglewood Forest to Caledon Kittiwickshire.
-
Short commuter branches run from Caledon Moors north to Caledon Cay, from Tamrannoch north to Caledon On Sea, and from Penzance north to Cape Wrath. Many of the lines in the south have connecting trolleys into the neighbourhoods."
